Pitch

Play as Tamino from Mozart's Magic Flute and try to save Pamina with your flute. Go through the different settings inspired by the opera and meet its characters.

Goal of the game

This game was made at the ARTFX school with a group of about ten people. We had to make a game for the Montpellier Opera for the performance of the Magic Flute directed by Anna Bernreitner.

After proposing several game ideas to our client, we finally decided on a 3D platformer. The game is intended for children from 7 years old so that they can have fun before the opera or during the interval. The idea was also to attract a new audience to the opera.

We had to create a short experience of about five minutes to allow as many people as possible to play the opera. The game will be played on an arcade terminal at the opera or available for download on Itchio.

What we decided to do

We decided to create three levels that would include key locations from the Magic Flute. We also wanted to add as many characters as possible from the opera, both in 3D with Tamino, the snake and the Queen of the Night. We also added as many characters as possible in 2D with Sarastro, Monostatos, the three Ladies and Pamina.

We wanted those who know the Magic Flute to find certain elements. But for those who don't know the Magic Flute, the game becomes a gateway to discover the opera.

We have taken the main stages of Tamino's journey to set up the different challenges of the game. Our target audience being young people or casuals, we decided to make an easier game that would ask players to take their time and think rather than have reflexes.

My role in this project

In this project, I was a game designer. We set up a game system around the character’s flute. The flute being the object that confers its powers to the character. The arcade terminal on which the game would be played having a joystick and three buttons we put a jump button and two buttons to play music.

Regarding the jump, the player can make a normal jump then have three additional impulses thanks to his flute. The flute allows the player to fly higher. We made this choice to allow the player to feel the magic side of the flute which allows exceeding the character’s abilities.

Concerning the two other buttons that allow playing music. We have created sequences to succeed with a limited time. The idea is to allow the player to have small breaks to keep a calm game speed. We keep the musical side of the opera with these sequences of notes to succeed, and we show another face of the flute.

Finally, we have also added a boss fight for the final level. Tamino arrives at the top of the tower and finds Pamina, he must face the Queen of the Night with her famous music in the background. We’ve taken all our mechanics and added bubble sequences to attack the Queen of the Night and a jump to avoid her attacks.
